Bates House of Turkey is a family-owned Alabama legend where folks gather for dishes like our famous hickory smoked turkey sandwich or our old-fashioned roast turkey dinner. It all started in 1923 when the Bates family opened our free-range turkey farm. As the farm became more successful, we opened the doors to our restaurant in 1969 just 12 miles down the road from our farm, and the rest is history. Enjoy a classic Thanksgiving dinner in the comfort of your own home — with none of the pressure but all of the fun!

The Bates family’s turkey legacy hatched from nine eggs
Cooking a full Thanksgiving dinner isn’t for the faint of heart. The dedication to brine and roast a turkey, or prime rib, then prepare all the sides, is something that even seasoned cooks know will take most of the entire day. With the difficulty of the past year-plus, it might be better to just let talented cooks in restaurants handle Thanksgiving.

When W.C. Bates Sr. and Helen (Bill Bates’ parents) were married, they got a special wedding present, the impact of which couldn’t have been imagined a hundred years ago. Aunt Mamie Bates gifted them with nine turkey eggs. In the years to come, that would grow into Bates Turkey Farm in Fort Deposit.

Bates turkeys are FREE RANGE, grown right here in Alabama the old-fashioned way. Our turkeys are grown to their full-breasted best, in a stress free environment under the cool shade of pecan groves by the shores of a small lake. Our farm is located in Logan, Alabama, just off I65 at exit 142.
Four hundred years of westward expansion and the overhunting, deforestation, and resource extraction that came with it left the population decimated. Today, due to conservation and reintroduction efforts, wild turkeys populations have rebounded to around seven million, and they inhabit about 18% of the state of California. While this successful reintroduction has often been deemed a conservation success story, there is debate over their place in California’s ecosystems. In 1923, Becky’s great grandparents were gifted nine turkey eggs as a wedding gift and soon began selling turkeys to neighbors for holiday meals.
Sugar Palm, Viceroy Santa Monica’s signature restaurant, is offering a delightful Thanksgiving feast to go this year, so you can celebrate with friends and family at home. No doubt the same things will be — and probably are already being — said about the new Montgomery branch.
For years, Bates House of Turkey has operated a pop-up shop in Montgomery during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, and customers in Alabama’s capital have been clamoring for them to open a permanent location, Sloane added. The Bates family also provides the ceremonial turkeys every year for Alabama’s governor to “pardon” at Thanksgiving. Bates, who passed away in 2013, recalled during a 2005 interview with WSFA 12 News that it all got started when his great-aunt gave his father nine turkey eggs as a wedding present. The business has been going strong for more than five generations.

That’s over 100 years that we’ve been in the turkey business.
